Our Club History

The Club was started in September 1942. Thirty people attended the meeting which was held at the School Room in Newtown Linford. The meeting was organized by Mr Stops who was the manager of the Leicester City Farms.

Mr John Reynolds, who was a founder member is still an advisory member today and has taken a keen interest in the Club's activities over the last 60 years.

In the early years the meetings were very different and more informal than those today. Most members walked or cycled to meetings and on the occasions that a visit was organised they would all squeeze into one car usually belonging to the father of one of the members.

By 1951 the Club had over fifty members, many of whom were from the Thurcaston and Cropston area, and the venue moved to Thurcaston Village Hall. This year also marked the Club's first Clay Pigeon Shoot.

1954 saw the Club win both the Senior and Junior Rally Cups at the Young Farmers Rally. The Club's success continued with achievements of their Tug of War team which won the event several times at the Young Farmers Rallies between 1955 and 1967. In 1959 they won the County AAA Championship and pulled all over the Midlands even competing against the European Champions.

In 1971 the Club moved in to is present home at St Paul's School Woodhouse Eaves.

During the late 1980's the Club's Tug of War Team returned to its previous successes and the membership continued to flourish.

The 1990's saw the Club continuing to raise funds for various charities including purchasing a Guide Dog, Rainbows Children's Hospice and the Phyllis Cook Foundation.

In the year 2000 the Club won the County Show Trophy for the first time and in both 2001 and 2002 the Senior lads won the football competition. 2002 also saw Karen Reynolds wining the Junior Member of the Year at County Level and her sister Nikki winning the same competition in 2005, they are both granddaughters of one of the founder members.

The Club looks forward to continuing its active involvement in the Young Farmers movement and to reaching further milestones in the future.
